The newly built Qingdao campus takes the marine discipline as an edging force, and the establishment of IMST is an important embodiment of academic and institutional mechanism innovation in Shandong University. IMST is an independent scientific research institution directly under the university, guided by the country’s major needs, and led by the international frontiers of marine science and technology, with the characteristics of land and sea co-ordination, cross-tech intersection, microscopic and macroscopic combination, science and technology combination, and actively integrating the marine related disciplines in schools, strengthening international and regional cooperation, and establishing an interdisciplinary research platform,  forming an advantageous academic team in several frontier fields of marine science and technology, and developing of a world-class marine discipline. It has provided a new and strong power for Shandong University to achieve the "double first-class construction".
